Default Hello from Phoenix

Hello, My name is Ron Luebke but I sign my name Ron Jr. on my art, if your interested you can see some of my past work by following the link here but be warned there is nudity, think playboy not penthouse http://www.rlmagic.com/scrim/scrimhome.htm To date I have only done scrimshaw but the other day I was reading Katherine Plumers blog (without doubt the best new scrimshaw artist working today) and saw something amazing that she was trying, bulino engraving . To say the least I was intrigued, I have an affliction for anything small and detailed. Anyways I have already bought some pieces to start on and only need a hand graver and the proper sharpening equipment (boy is this graver stuff expensive!) to start. I just joined but there are some amazing artisans here on the engraving forum and I look forward to meeting and discussing this amazing art form with any/all of the members.

Wowww, Ron Jr. !! Your scrimshaw Art is really amazing, very beautiful indeed (no, I wasn't shocked by looking at the fine nudes)! I love Catherine Plumer's work as well, but I'm sure your scrimshaw can compete with hers ! I'm a stone sculptor & new member here on the forum as well, just started to learn engraving (handpush-method) with evening classes in Antwerp since 3 months (ancient method=very difficult!). The bulino engraving technique that's something I 'm fascinated by & want to learn & try for sure, because drawing with the 'stippling' technique using very fine pen & black ink, I 've practised a lot before I did tattooing and sculpting stone. Just from admiring the beautiful scrim works I saw on the forum, I made my first attempt on scrimshaw too. Only, to find the good base material to work on is not easy ( I made my first on an old, broken (horn?) bracelet, I'll have to try on some other canvas/ground I guess, because the horn is a bit 'oily' inside. Kind regards, Paulsph

Hi Paulsph and thanks Don't get discouraged by that bone/horn bracelet you tried! Both materials are very difficult to work with. Probably the best most readily available man made materials to try scrimshaw on is either corian or micarta. Micarta can be kinda finicky though, some scrims well some doesn't, depends on the manufacturer.
