Here's one of the latest knives I finished.
Blade is Stainless damascus made by Devon Thomas. The blade is 3" long for referance. The bolster is 1.5" on the long side. The screws are 0-80 Button heads. ![]() |

Andy, that is just plain out fantastic. Your work is simply stunning. I love the way the gold grows into the leaves.
Best wishes Andrew Biggs |

Holy Cow. I cannot even imagine ever being able to do anything remotely like that. That is absolutely incredible. You obviously are one of those people who have a gift, not only for engraving, but for art as well. Just out of curiosity, how many hours did it take you to produce such a masterpiece?

Friend Andy
This engraving is really fantastic and of a great beauty. I have seen engravings carried out by you, but this engraving that shows us one of the better seems me. A very elegant design. Congratulations friend. ![]() Montejano |

Thanks,
In answer to the question of time. I believe I had about thirty hours in the actual cutting of the design. |

Beautiful, Andy. Is the bolster a layer of steel over a layer of gold?

Nice! Tasteful….
Question…how come you did not continue the gold theme on the backbone? The curly ques at the ends of the pattern would have benefited from the gold and would have provided continuity for the rest of the piece without the overall design going overboard as to amount of gold. j.c. |

In answer to a few questions. The gold under the bolster is nothing more than anodized Tianium. And yes the spine probably would have benefitted from some gold but I was exceeding the budget on this one and had to let it go.

Andy, your work and design is above and beyond the "killer" zone. Very nice!
This may be a stupid question but I was wondering how much gold it took? Thanx, GDee |

I don't usually keep track too close. The amount of gold used is pennies compared with the time it takes to actually inlay and finish it. This obviously isn't always the case. But on the really small inlays it can be slow and tedious.

So if I bought an ounce of 24k wire/sheet would it last quite a while? I know nothing about gold or silver.
Thanx Andy |

GDee,
I use a lot of gold and an ounce will last me a long time usually, around 6 months, sometimes longer. That being said, I have a good quality carbide draw plate and a rolling mill so I can buy ounce ingots or coins and draw out what I need asw I need it. This helps it go farther than having to buy several sizes and wasting by not having exactly the size you need. Ray |
