Default Hello from N. Calif.

Hello Im new here but I've been lurking at the tutorials. I have learned so much from them, thank you.
I started making knives about four years ago, and after seeing the engraving on the knives in the magazines I had to try it. I started with my own forged gravers and a old drill press base. Then I took a beginer class and got some tools. I work as a steel fabricator and I don't have as much time as I would like to make knives and engrave.
Here are a few pics. of my work. The dagger is what Im working on now. The guard is stainless, that was a mistake, it's taking for ever but now im learning to use carbide.

Hi David, Welcome!

I like that dagger. Did you file spiral handle? Looks super nice. Are you making the Damascus too?

Steve

Nice work David! It's great to see another Knife aficionado on the forum (though I just got started at both making and engraving).

I really like the dagger! You're a man of many talents; I noticed some scrimshaw on the knifes on your website along with the many nice wrought iron pieces.

I was wondering if you did the sailboat inlay before or after tempering? Afterwards seems like it would have been really difficult, but I also noticed that you got interested in knives from watching a Japanese smith forging a blade. I was thinking perhaps for that blade you used a hard core steel, jacketed with a steel that remains a little softer after tempering like some of the traditional Japanese smiths do?

Anyway, welcome to the forum! Hope to see more of your work.

Thank You, Yes I did made the damascus, The handle is redwood bural and I used a small sanding drumb on a rotery tool to grind the spirals. This was my first silver wire inlay.
The gold sailboats are inlayed above the temper line in the softer steel.
