Drawing is probably the most important skill for engravers, as much as most of us try to wish otherwise. They always say "A well-designed piece adequately cut, looks much better than a poorly designed piece expertly cut."
If you refine your location there are probably some folks near you where you can go give things a quick try.
Your absolute best thing you can do is take a class, preferably where you can try multiple ways of engraving. Even if you only get to work with one system you'll still spend a lot less on a class than you would buying everything you need to give it a real try at home.
If you do want to just give it a try look at Steve's starter kit for basic push engraving. While it's not cheap, it's pretty darn inexpensive for the world of engraving.
