Default Ring holder, for engraving inside rings

Hopefully this works. My first thread and first picture. Followed William Grubb's instructions in tip archive. Seemed easy, but did it work?

Anyway, this is a very nicely made tool, "Patented Sept. 3 1912." Have not used it but it seems like it would work well. Bottom clamps in vise, and you turn outer knurled wheel.

Probably hard to find on Ebay since people don't know what it is so it probably would not be listed under engraving tools. Saw one once on Ebay listed as a lathe tool. Seller was sure he knew what he had and was talking about.

Hello Kevin,
My name is Josh Kelly, located in Central Texas. You are very correct by saying that most people don't know what it is. I ran into the same situation when I found one at a old tool sale and it was with the lathe parts and was explained to me as "We think it is a lathe ring that is missing its bearings". I thought that this fellow was a tool expert so I walked away from it. He puts on a sale every other month and in the times I have been there, no body has given it a second look. It looks identical to the picture that you posted. Thanks for taking the time and effort to post the picture, I am in the same boat when it comes to technilogical issues. I am going to pick it up next month and I (my kids) will post in your thread so that you can see it. Thanks again MY Friend! Respectfully, Josh Kelly

Thanks for posting this indeed Kevin!
I think someone has put this machine into a new suit
Thought it was his idea.
I would love to find one, but that chance is pretty slim here in holland i guess.

i think this rendering missing the grove with the 2 set screw so the vise can turn as you engrave the inside of the ring. i think it kind of importance.

I made my ring holder without a groove, I added 2 super magnets (black circles) to pull the metal ring towards the bearings. That works great!.
I thought it would be easier to design etc while already clamped. Still need to put in the right screws... Of course, you can't beat Steve's craftsmanship.

This is fine but how do you cope with rings that need to be engraved inside but have stones in the way on the outside. This clamp doesn't look like it would be able to work with that situation. The clamps would damage the stones?

There is some space between the clamps but if the clamps are in the way of the stones, then you'd need to use another method to hold the ring.

Steve

Do you have a date yet for the ring holder? Even a ball park date would be good

Thanks

Chris, congrats on the holder. Looks well made, maybe a custom one of?
Does not seem to be made to be held in a vise, and not sure how it was used and turned.
Let us know how it works for you. Kevin Scott

I always prefer to make my own tools as well as I know they will suit my needs exactly as well as a great sense of satisfaction in doing it myself .
